Reception, Unit 1: Handa’s Surprise – Lesson 3

Early Learning Goals:

  • To listen to, perform and internalise rhythms.
  • To identify instrumental timbres (sounds) of non-European music.
  • To maintain a pulse through movement.


Starter activity: Look at pictures that show many examples of African instruments. Pay close attention to; the Mbira, Balafon, Kora and Djembe.

Main activity: Revisit the previous lesson's main activity, test the knowledge of the Fruit Rhythm cards in the form of a class game.

Plenary: Listen to ‘Wimmoweh’ played by the Soweto String quartet, followed by a call and response exercise.
